Cairo Governor Major-General Khaled Abdel Aal witnesses on Saturday Cairo governorate’s celebration of operating 20 new gas-powered and air-conditioned buses as well as the first bus converted from diesel to natural gas as a trial to be applied to the fleet of the Public Transport Authority.
The governor said that the 20 buses are the second batch of a total 150 buses worth 610 million as the authority imported 65 buses and another 65 will be imported by the end of this year.
Moreover, the governor added that it is all part of the state’s plan to run all vehicles by natural gas following President Sisi’s directions noting that Cairo governorate is keen to have new contracts of eco-friendly buses run on natural gas and electricity in line with the state’s approach to rely on clean and safe energy to preserve the environment.
Mr. Abdel Aal also pointed out that upgrading the public transport system in Cairo will always be a priority to Cairo governorate’s bodies, especially the Public Transport Authority.
On the other hand, Chief of the Public Transport Authority of Cairo Major- General Rezq Ali said that converting buses from diesel to natural gas will save around 10000 pounds monthly. He also added that the authority imported 161 buses running on natural gas, including 85 air-conditioned buses equipped for physically challenged people.
Mr. Rezq also announced that surveillance cameras were installed at a number of the authority's garages as well as GPS on 1000 buses.
At the end of the ceremony, the Cairo governor took a tour on one of the new buses in the Downtown area.
