Local Development min., Cairo gov. inaugurate waste transfer station

Minister of Local Development Hesham Amna and Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal inaugurated Sunday morning, August 13, the intermediate transfer station for municipal solid waste on port Said- Ghamra Street in the capital.

The total cost of the station is LE80 million. It serves 8 neighborhoods of Cairo’s north area: Shubra, Al-Zaweya Al-Hamra, Hadyek Al-Quba, Roxy, Al-Sharabia, Al-Sahel, Al-Zatoun, and Al-Amireya.     

The station is in on area of 4381 square meters, with a capacity of approximately 1500 to 2000 tons per day. The station's equipment includes 12 dump trucks with a capacity of 24 m3 each, 1.3 m3 caterpillar wheel loader, a generator, an air compressor, and a car wash.

The new station will contribute to improving the waste collection and transfer process in the north area and enhancing the performance of the waste management system.

The new station is part of the contract signed between the Local Development, Environment, and Planning Ministries and the Arab Organization for Industrialization to implement infrastructure projects for the waste management system.

Also in attendance were Deputy Cairo Governor Dr. Hossam Fawzy, Assistant Minister of Local Development Khaled Qassem, Director of the Waste Unit Ahmad Atef, Chairman of the Cairo Cleaning and Beautification Authority Ehab El-Shershaby, representatives of the Waste Management Authority of the Ministry of Environment, several officials of Cairo governorate.    

Following the inauguration, Minister Amna and Governor Abdel Aal inspected the new station, where they were given a detailed explanation of the station’s operation mechanisms and components, the training and qualification programs for the station’s workers on the new equipment, and safety, vocational health, and civil defense measures at the station.

For his part, Minister of Local Development Hesham Amna pointed out that the ministry has funded the establishment of several infrastructure projects for the waste management system in Cairo over the past period, including 7 fixed and mobile intermediate transfer stations at a cost of LE 220 million, to improve the efficiency of municipal solid waste collection and transportation services, to ensure the sustainability of the service throughout the day and to prevent any garbage accumulations in the streets.

The Minister of Local Development added that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli constantly follow up on the latest developments of the municipal solid waste system across the Egyptian cities, in coordination with the relevant ministries, including the Environment, Military Production, and Planning Ministries, and the Arab Organization for Industrialization, contributing to regaining the aesthetic appearance of the Egyptian street,

That comes in line with the national projects implemented by the state across Egypt, including upgrading road projects, and improving cleanliness’s level in all cities to achieve citizens’ satisfaction.

Moreover, Amna emphasized the government’s endeavors to establish a highly-effective sustainable waste management system, achieve citizens’ interest, and ensure a quick waste disposal system to protect the environment and citizens’ health. He also welcomed the private sector companies interested in operating infrastructure projects completed in many cities. 

For his part, Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal asserted that the newly-established transfer station comes in line with political leadership’s instructions to upgrade the waste management system and safe disposal of solid waste in addition to taking necessary measures to protect the environment through the new integrated waste management system.

Abdel Aal added that the station’s inauguration is a new step towards improving the infrastructure of the waste system in the capital to upgrade cleanliness across the capital, maintain citizens’ health, and overcome the problem of waste accumulation and safe disposal, in order to upgrade the waste management service in all its forms.  

Furthermore, Abdel Aal praised the efforts of the state bodies represented by the Ministries of Local Development, Environment, and Planning and the Arab Organization for Industrialization in establishing such stations, which contribute to the safe disposal of waste, preventing its accumulation, and improving the cleanliness level, leading to environmental protection from pollution and maintaining citizens' health.

It is worth mentioning that the new station is secured with a concrete fence and completely covered with a metal truss that covers the entire site.

There is a service building at the station consisting of a mosque, an administration room, a staff room, two worker rooms, and restrooms.

The station is secured with a fire system that includes a fire room, and it has a complete firefighting system that contains fire tanks totaling 60 cubic meters, 3 fire pumps, and a firefighting network.

The station also has a sewage system, and there are 10 surveillance cameras at the entry and exit points equipped with a data storage device.
