Egyptian President
Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has issued a decree reshuffling the members of a number of
the country’s media bodies, including the Supreme Council for Media Regulation
(SCMR).
According to the decree, which was published in the official state gazette, El-Sisi appointed Karam Gabr, the incumbent head of the National Press Authority (NPA), as the new head of the SCMR, replacing veteran journalist Makram Mohamed Ahmed.
The SCMR includes representatives from the State Council, the Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA), the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), and several journalists, as per the decree, Abdel-Sadek El-Shorbagy will replace Gabr as the head of the NPA, the reshuffle for which includes representatives from the State Council, the finance ministry, the national press, and workers at press institutions.
The National Media Authority will now be led by Hussein Zein, the decree showed, with other members in the reshuffle including representatives from the State Council, the finance ministry, the NTRA, and public figures, all the media entities will see a four-year term, as stipulated by the decree.
Under Egypt's 2014 constitution, TV, radio, print and online media are regulated by three bodies: the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, the National Press Authority, and the National Media Authority.
