Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli visited Tahrir Square in Cairo on Sunday to inspect the development project run by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Ministry of Culture.
Tahrir Square covers 45,000 meters, hosting the huge roundabout, Omar Makram Mosque, the Egyptian Museum, Mogamma El-Tahrir government complex, the old Ministry of Foreign Affairs building and the massive Tahrir Parking Garage.
Digging work has reached the
underground metro station of Sadat to establish a base for
a 19-meter high obelisk that weighs 100 tons.
The obelisk, originally from Tanis in the north-eastern Nile Delta, has already
been restored and installed.
About 90 percent of the renovation work has
been accomplished,
and when it is finalized, the square is set to be a major tourist attraction,
especially that the area surrounding Tahrir in downtown boasts an old cosmopolitan style, in addition to the Egyptian
Museum.
